About Us

In 2006, a small group of dedicated parents started Cub Scout Pack 977 through its charter organization, the First United Methodist Church in Bryan, TX. We quickly grew from a few Cub Scouts to a large Pack. We strive to maintain a Cub Scout program that has a profound positive impact on the boys we serve. Being centrally located at First United Methodist Church near Downtown Bryan means that not only is the Cub Scouting program central to our community's future, but our location is centrally located for the boys whose future we are impacting.

We believe that Cub scouting is a unique ministry to our community. We're here to help parents and their boys as their Cub Scouts grow in the principles of Faith, Country, Family, Honesty, Integrity, Loyalty, Sportsmanship and everything a parent always strives for with their boys. We work closely with Troop 977 and other Boy Scout Troops to prepare the boys for an exciting future as a Boy Scout. In the meantime, we have a dedicated group of parents and adult leaders that work hard to put together a fun, educational, and exciting Cub Scout Program that is second to none.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I join Cub Scouts anytime?
A: Yes! We have one major recruiting night in the Fall and in the Spring, but boys join all the time! Especially after they hear how much fun one of their buddies in the Pack is having without them...!

Q: Do I have to volunteer to be a Den Leader or something like that if my boy wants to join?
A: No! We'd like everyone to give according to their skills and abilities because it is the participation of the adults that makes Cub Scouts work. It's a lot more fun if you're helping lead your boy and molding his peers, but not everyone is cut out for that. You are expected to help your boy advance in the achievements in his book, and be an active parent at Pack meetings and Den meetings, but those are things you can bring the whole family to, especially the Pack Meetings - they are designed for the entire family!

Q: Will I get help if I volunteer?
A: Absolutely! The Boy Scouts of America have training modules that will quickly get you up to speed. Most of them can be taken online. We also have face-to-face training within the Pack if you need it. In addition, there are manuals with helpful information on everything from how to run a Den meeting to how to conduct a pinewood derby race. It's easier than thinking!

Q: How much time does Cub Scouts take?
A: Cub Scouts takes less time than it probably takes you to get your kids to brush their teeth and get in bed.. We suggest 30 minutes a week at home with him working on his achievements in his Cub Scout handbook, and then an hour a week for Den Meetings. There is a monthly Pack meeting that is held instead of Den meeting each month. Then, of course, are all the neat activities and events you can do with the Den or Pack, but nothing is mandatory. So figure six to eight hours a month with your boy. Not a bad deal...for you or him!

Q: So, how much does this cost?
A: Most of the costs associated with Cub Scouts are generously underwritten by Flags Across Bryan. However, we want to teach your son self-reliance rather than relying on handouts from others. Cub Scouts sell popcorn to raise money for their dues, uniforms, supplies, and activities, so it is possible to be in Cub Scouts and not pay a dime. It’s fun, and it teaches your Cub Scout a valuable life lesson. For Adult Leaders, all of your expenses are paid for by the Pack.

Q: Does a boy have to have a Dad or both parents to be involved?
A: No. Cub Scouting recognizes the unique situations each boy finds himself in, and is a perfect support structure for the family that has come across some unfortunate situation that the boy is experiencing. Moms and Dads without spouses can be involved with their boys in Cub Scouting...the program is not gender-specific in terms of the adult participation. Pack 977 offers a wholesome, character-based and honoroable group of men and women who support boys and their parents or guardians with an atmosphere that helps instill those elements that a boy's life need. So, any boy can participate, and any legal guardian can stand beside him proudly as they help support him along the Cub Scout Trail!
